Thanksgiving 2008

This year the Community Center is proud to have worked with a wide range of partners to organize a St Bernard Community CROP Walk and Thanksgiving Meal on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. Thanks to your support we were able to serve about 500 turkey dinners with all the trimmings to guests, volunteers and homebound residents - and there was plenty left for everyone who wanted seconds (and thirds!)

THANK YOU!

The Community Center is proud to acknowledge all the partners, donors, and volunteers whose contributions made the St Bernard Parish CROP Walk and Thanksgiving Meal possible. We are truly thankful for each and every one of you!

CROP WALK

The 2008 Thanksgiving Celebration began at 11 AM with a CROP Walk in Sidney Torres Park in Chalmette. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, and CROP Walks give people an easy way to fight hunger both world-wide and in their local community. CROP Walk participants asked sponsors to make a donation for each mile that they walked. The further that they went, the more money they raised to help feed hungry families all around the world. The CROP Walk route at Torres Park was a one-mile loop, so walkers could go around as often as they wanted to meet their personal distance goal.

Together walkers in St Bernard and online raised $581 to fight hunger both in "da Parish" and worldwide! 25% of that amount ($145.25) will be used to help families here in St Bernard through the Community Center's Mustard Seed Food Pantry, while the rest will go to a variety of international aid groups. The Community Center will use its funds to pay for transporting food from the Second Harvest/Feeding America warehouse in New Orleans out to St Bernard for distribution to low-income families. THANK YOU to all the walkers, sponsors, and volunteers who came together to make this CROP Walk such a wonderful event!
